Because when you’re helping someone sell their home in Lancaster, you’re not just handling bricks and mortar. You’re guiding them through one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions of their lives. Trust should be a given.
So why does our industry struggle with it?
Historically, entry into estate agency hasn’t always been difficult enough. And while regulation has increased significantly over the years — from anti-money laundering rules to material information requirements and strict consumer protection laws — regulation alone doesn’t create trust. Integrity does.
At JDG, we’ve always believed that how you do the job matters just as much as the results you achieve. Yes, performance is important. We were incredibly proud to win the award for UK’s Best Estate Agent. That recognised our results, service levels and consistency. But I’ll share something openly- "It was harder to gain entry into The Ethical Estate Agency than it was to win that award". And that says a lot.
The Ethical Estate Agency isn’t about marketing or trophies. It’s about scrutiny. We had to demonstrate, in detail, how we value property, how we communicate, how transparent our fees are, how we train our team and how we protect our clients’ interests. It examined our processes, our advice and our accountability. Not just what we say — but what we actually do. You don’t simply apply and join. You have to prove that your standards consistently put the client first. That level of assessment was tougher than any award submission.
Why does that matter to homeowners in Lancaster?
Because this is a community built on reputation. Many of our clients come to us through recommendation. Families return to us years later when it’s time for their next move. That only happens when people feel properly looked after.
Trust isn’t built through slogans. It’s built through honest pricing advice, clear communication, evidence-based valuations and doing exactly what you say you will do. The industry may have a trust challenge, but the answer isn’t defensive words. It’s higher standards. For us, being part of The Ethical Estate Agency is a public commitment to those standards. It keeps us accountable. It keeps us sharp. And it reassures our clients that integrity isn’t an afterthought — it’s the foundation.
Awards recognise performance. Ethical accreditation recognises principles. And in our view, principles are what truly matter.
