Selling your home? It’s time to Spring into Action!

Posted on Friday, March 1, 2024

The spring is officially here.  The days may still be cool and often damp, however, the occasional appearance of the sun is changing the way many house hunters are thinking.  The focus is rapidly changing from the cosy fireplace and wood burning stove to something slightly more important  –  Your outside space.

Your garden is so important when it comes to selling your home therefore you need to make the most of it. It needs to look at it’s best.  Excuses of the time of year are no longer acceptable.  You need to get out there and get rid of any signs of the winter and the high winds we’ve experienced.  Your garden is a feature that could make or break your sale.  Here are five of our top tips which are easy to do and help you achieve selling success!

Mow the lawn

Mowing the lawn is such a simple tip, yet so many lawns are looking a bit overgrown.  A little tip from our gardening friends is to set the mower at the highest setting.  It will neaten it all up without making it looked scalped.

Sweep up dead leaves

Is your garden full of dead leaves?  If so sweep them up and put them into your gardening waste bin.  You also need to trim back any plants with dead growth and prune any hedging or bushes that are looking a little overgrown.  It all makes a difference.

Tidy up the flower beds

Have you noticed garden centres are busier when the weather is sunny?  All of those people buying bedding plants and seasonal plants.  You need to be one of them.  Start with a tidy of your flower beds.  Now add some colourful plants.  Bedding plants are relatively cheap.  Adding a simple colour to your garden will make such a huge difference.  Try and stick to 2 or 3 colours.  Coordinated gardens look like you have made a real effort!

Paint the fence, shed and gate

Stand back and look at your fence.  Has your fence seen better days?  Worse still are the panels different shades of wood stain?  It’s time to get re-staining.  An older shed can be given a new lease of life by simple re-stain.  Matching panels make a garden look more complete.  You’ll be surprised by the difference!

Remove broken toys, old pots and the rusty barbecue

Who is guilty of this?  Have you left your bbq out over the winter?  Did your children’s trampoline suffer damage in the wind?  Do you have broken pots?  If you do, now is the time to remove them.  At the very least put them out of sight in the garage or shed.  You need to show off the best of your garden, not the worst!

Bring out the table and chairs

Bring out your table and chairs.  This is also a great tip for anyone with a back yard.  Show your buyers you have the space to sit out and relax or even dine alfresco.  Just make sure your furniture is looking good.  It might mean washing the cushions or re-oiling a teak table, but remember this will all help you achieve selling success!

A great garden however large or small will impress your buyers.  It will help you stand out against the competition.  Many of these tips can also be used by homes with backyards.  All you need to do is make the most of the outside space you have.
