Love where you live - A walk along St Georges Quay to Glasson Dock

Posted on Friday, April 3, 2020

One of my favourite walks on a Sunday (when the sun is shining) is along New Quay Road down to Glasson Dock.  Again, living close to the Cricket Ground it means I can leave my car at home.  New Quay Road is in LA1 5 and runs alongside the River Lune.
Love where you live - A walk along St Georges Quay to Glasson Dock

We'll start the walk at the Millenium Bridge and enjoy a stroll along St Georges Quay. The path follows a converted railway track so it's nice and flat.  There are handy stops for the loo at Conder Green and Glasson.

Refreshments can be sought in the pubs along St Georges Quay (The 3 Mariners/The George and Dragon and The Wagon and Horses), Conder Green (I love Cafe d'Lune) and there are also plenty of spots to choose from at Glasson Dock.  It makes for a great afternoon out.

At the end of St Georges Quay, the road narrows into a tarmac path, alongside Freeman's Wood. You bear left at the end and the path continues towards the bottom of Aldcliffe. Follow the signs along the cycle path (this is the old railway track along the estuary).

You'll arrive at a large car park at Conder Green and then go over a small bridge where the path takes you into Glasson.

Once in Glasson, it's worth crossing the swing bridge between the harbours to go up the hill. It's a lovely view across the estuary to Sunderland Point.

After you are suitably rested and refreshed begin your return journey by following the path back.

Hopefully, on this walk you will see a variety of birds on the estuary and salt marshes, wildlife along the way and small merchant ships, yachts and narrowboats at Glasson Dock.  Don't forget your camera so you can take pictures along the way!

I think it is great that walks like this can be so easily enjoyed.  When you live in Lancaster, you really do have the city, coast and countryside on your doorstep.

Please share with me your favourite walks and I'll happily add them to our Lancaster Area Guides!
