5 Reasons to live in LA1 5 - a focus on The Willows

Posted on Sunday, August 23, 2020

The Willows is a small development of mainly  one and two-bedroom  houses and apartments, built in the 1990s, located in the Marsh area of Lancaster.  There are a few 3-bed homes. It is set next to Lancaster Cricket ground which us rather apt given the fact that the streets are named after famous Cricketer's.  Take Hadlee Terrace, for example, this street is named after Richard Hadlee, the famous New Zealand Cricket Captain.

Michael Atherton was the England Cricket Captain who also played for Lancashire.    Viv Richards was West Indies captain - he now has a stadium in Antigua named after him!

This area is popular with first time buyers, young families, those who have downsized and retirees. The style of property is popular as these homes offer gardens and off-road parking.  There is a small play area on Atherton Road making this a family-friendly spot.    The Willows has even been home to a few different members of the JDG team!  Michelle, Graham and Jody have all lived there.  When homes come up for sale or rent on The Willows they don’t hang around for long!   So what makes The Willows so popular?

No. 1 The Location

The Marsh is only a 10-minute walk to the train station so it’s perfect for those who commute for work.  Five minutes beyond the train station and you are in the City Centre with high street shops, bars, restaurantsentertainment and leisure venues. There are no worries about parking or taxis when you live this close to the city.

No.2  The local amenities

Not only are local amenities literally on the doorstep, there is even the newly open Aldi supermarket close by, but you’ll also find woodland walks and nature close by too.

No.3  Public House and Dining Options

Take a left as you leave The Willows on to Lune Road and St Georges Quay and the River Lune are less than 5 minutes away on foot. St Georges Quay is home to 3 popular public houses, The Wagon and Horses, George and Dragon and The 3 Mariners and also the acclaimed Quite Simply French restaurant.

No.4  Enjoyable Walks

When you reach The Quay and turn left following the river, you’ll find pleasant walks near Freeman’s Wood and Freeman’s Pools, it’s not uncommon to spot a variety of wildlife as you wander through the trees and greenery. Beyond Freeman’s Wood the footpath takes you towards Aldcliffe, you can take a left as you reach the canal and wander back into the City towards The Water Witch public house or the old railway line which is now a public footpath takes you on a pleasant route to Glasson Dock.

No.5 Getting around

The Marsh area is well served by public transport links. Bus Routes 41/42 and 89 run locally and the bus station is just a twenty-minute walk away where you can easily reach the surrounding areas of Morecambe, Halton, Bolton le Sands and beyond.  There are many cycle routes too reaching Lancaster, Morecambe and the Lune Valley.  Don't forget Lancaster Train Station is just a 10-minute walk.  This is a mainline station with direct routes to Preston, Morecambe,  The Lakes and also Manchester and London!
