Love where you live - A riverside walk in Lancaster

Posted on Thursday, February 13, 2020

I thought I would write these walks after a new neighbour asked me where she could go for a walk.  I live close to the Cricket Ground in Lancaster and I like nothing more than leaving the car at home and heading off on foot.    Today I thought I would share with you a walk I enjoy alongside the banks of the River Lune.
Love where you live - A riverside walk in Lancaster
The River Lune Millenium Park covers over 9 miles of the banks of the River Lune. Combining footpaths and cycleways, you can start the walk in Lancaster and walk to Bull Beck near Caton enjoying some great vantage points of the river. You'll also come across some interesting artwork and information points along the way.

This particular walk isn't a circular route, you double back at Bull Beck. It's pleasant seeing the river at a different time of day as you make your return journey.

I like to begin the walk on the Millenium Bridge. The path follows a converted railway track so it's mostly nice and flat.

There are handy stops for the loo at Crook O'Lune and Bull Beck. Refreshments can be located in Caton and dependent on opening times, Woodies does a great range of snacks and drinks at the Crook O'Lune picnic site.

You follow the path, which is well sign-posted, from the Millenium Bridge, go through the underpass near Sainsbury's and take in along the way:

Skerton Weir
The Lune Aquaduct
Cross Denny Beck Lane (going past the old Railway Station and through the small tunnel)
Crook O'Lune - toilets and refreshments here
Past Caton village centre (also places for refreshment here)

The cycle path ends at Bull Beck car park and picnic area and becomes just a footpath.  At this point, I normally turn around and make my return journey.

I've walked this route a few times and will be doing so again this summer.  I'm determined to spot a kingfisher!
