The Ten-Minute Autumn Home Security Check for Lancaster and Morecambe

When the evenings get darker, it becomes easier to spot a home that appears empty. You might still be at work at 6pm, but if yours is the only unlit house on the street, it can show.

October is National Home Security Month, so I thought I’d share a quick check you can do around your home this week. It applies whether you own or rent, and most of it costs nothing. (homesecuritymonth.com)

Why check your home security in autumn?

It is easy to overlook the small things we see every day: the side gate that no longer bolts, a parcel left on the step, or keys visible through the front window. Darker evenings make this a good time to look at your home with fresh eyes.

I’d give yourself ten minutes and start at the front door.

What should you check?

  1. Doors: Do your front and back doors lock properly? Get into the habit of locking them, even when you are at home.

  2. Windows: Check that they close and lock, including any upstairs windows that could be reached from a flat roof or bin.

  3. Side gate: Does it latch securely? A loose gate can make the back of your home easy to reach.

  4. Shed and garage: Lock away ladders and tools. They are valuable in their own right and could also help someone get inside.

  5. Lighting: If you are often out when it gets dark, put a lamp on a timer. Check that any outside light works, too.

  6. What people can see: Stand outside and glance through your windows. Move keys, laptops and other valuables out of view.

  7. Deliveries: Choose a safe place, parcel locker or trusted neighbour rather than leaving packages on the doorstep.

These are simple steps, but they are the sort of everyday precautions recommended in police home security advice. (Police.uk)

What if you rent your home?

Do the same walk-round. If a door, window or lock is damaged, report it to your landlord or letting agent in writing so it can be addressed. It is also worth checking your contents insurance: your landlord’s policy generally will not cover your personal belongings. (GOV.UK)

If you are going away, ask someone you trust to keep an eye on the house and deal with post or parcels. A lamp on a timer helps while you are away as well as on ordinary workdays.

Frequently asked questions

Do darker evenings make a difference to home security?
They can make an unlit, apparently empty home more noticeable. Locking up and using a light timer when you are out are sensible autumn habits. (Police.uk)

What is the cheapest way to improve home security?
Start with what you already have: lock doors and windows, secure the side gate, and keep valuables out of sight. Then consider an inexpensive lamp timer.

Whose job is security in a rented home?
Tenants should use the locks provided and report faults promptly. Landlords should address broken doors and windows and ensure the home is safe. Tenants should arrange cover for their own belongings. (GOV.UK)
