How to Choose a Good Removals Company: Tips for Lancaster and Morecambe Home Movers

You have boxes in every room, furniture that suddenly looks much bigger than it did before, and a completion time that depends on solicitors, banks and the rest of the property chain.

Then there is the removal van.

Over the years, I have seen how much difference a good removals company can make. They will not stop your solicitor calling at the last minute or make the keys arrive any sooner, but they can keep everything else running calmly.

Start looking early

Do not wait until the week before your move to start making calls.

Good removal companies can get booked up, especially on Fridays, at the end of the month and during the summer. You might not have a confirmed completion date yet, but you can still ask about availability, prices and what happens if your date changes.

Midweek moves can sometimes be cheaper, too.

It is also worth remembering that Lancaster and Morecambe have their own little challenges. Traffic, university moving dates, events and limited parking can all affect the day.

Ask people who have moved recently

Personal recommendations are often the best place to begin.

Ask friends, family or your estate agent who they have used. More importantly, ask whether they would use them again.

Online reviews are useful, but read a few rather than relying on the overall score. I would look for comments about whether the team arrived on time, handled belongings carefully and kept people informed.

That tells you far more than somebody simply writing, “Great service.”

Be honest about what you own

This is where people often underestimate the job.

The removal company needs to know about everything, not just the furniture they can see in the main rooms. Tell them about the boxes in the loft, the contents of the shed and the garage you have been meaning to clear for years.

Mention anything awkward or heavy, including pianos, safes, large wardrobes, garden furniture and big fridge freezers.

Do not forget the access, either. Some Lancaster terraces have narrow streets and limited parking. Morecambe properties may have rear access, shared driveways or steps. Village homes can come with tight lanes and gateways that are difficult for a large lorry.

These details may affect the quote, but it is much better to discuss them beforehand than have a disagreement on moving day.

Get a proper quote

A home visit or video survey will usually give you a more accurate price than a quick conversation over the phone.

Ask whether the quote is fixed or hourly. An hourly rate can seem cheaper, but it may not stay that way if there are delays.

You should also check what is included. Will they dismantle beds? Are boxes provided? Will they pack for you? Is there an additional charge if they have to wait for the keys?

Get all of this in writing.

Check the insurance

Ask what would happen if something was lost or damaged.

A proper removals company should be able to explain its goods-in-transit and public liability cover clearly. Valuable or unusual belongings may need to be declared separately.

You can also check whether the company belongs to the British Association of Removers. It is not the only way to judge a business, but it does give you an extra level of reassurance.

The cheapest quote is not always the best one. I would rather choose a company that asks sensible questions, understands the property and turns up prepared.

Moving day will probably still be busy. With the right removals team, though, it should feel much more manageable.
